My Soda Can Collection
I have about 3500 soda cans that I have been collecting since 1971. I was first attracted by specialty advertising cans that were part of a set, I loved the vibrant, colorful graphics. I put a few on a shelf. Friends noticed them and started to save different cans for me. I also began looking in grocery stores for special cans. I opened them neatly using two small holes in the bottom and drained them. Later during the eighties I traveled a little and realized that other places and countries had specialty cans. These cans ranged from single cans to large sets - up to fifty cans. They advertised or promoted local fairs, theme parks, special events, exhibitions and many larger events such as the Olympics. I exchanged cans with contacts in Asia, Japan and the Netherlands. I found out during the late eighties that it was better to drain cans because of the chance of these new light aluminum cans exploding. This was very true when cans were shipped by air. The cans would collapse or burst a seam at flying altitudes. During the nineties with the creation of eBay trading and buying of cans (or an other item) world wide was made a lot easier. I collected 99% of the Star Wars Episode can sets world wide. I now have stopped purchasing any cans as I am retired and do not have a lot of display room. Although if I see any local theme cans I collect them. In summary, collecting soda cans is actually quite educational (like collecting stamps). I have learned a lot about various countries around the world, and their ongoing history and events. Oh, oh! ...I just got an email from a collector with over 5000 cans for sale! |
